Badge

Each symbol of The Girls' Brigade adds to its total meaning of LOVE -

The LAMP is likened to our lives - empty, it is useless; filled but left unlit it is simply an ornament. It must be set alight. We have the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives, but as with the oil, the spark of God's love is needed to set us alight.

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." - Psalm 119:105

The FLAME OF LOVE will then shine out from the Lamp - God's love shines through us to others.

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:16

The CROSS is at the centre. The Lamp is at the foot of the Cross where we begin to live as Christians. Looking up at the Cross we are reminded that God's love for us is so great that He gave His Son to die for us.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." - John 3:16

The RED BACKGROUND helps us to remember that Jesus' blood was shed that we might be cleansed from our sins.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." - Ephesians 2:8-10

The CIRCLE signifies God's encircling love. To remain in that Circle we must forgive and accept others. To keep that Circle complete we each have a place in it, being loyal to God, to His Church, and to one another.

"For as the body is one and has many members but all the members of that body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ." - 1 Corinthians 12:12

The TORCH OF ENDEAVOUR at the top of the badge becomes a reality if Flames of Love burn brightly in the lives of all Brigaders.

"... with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." - Ephesians 4:2-3

The CROWN which supports the Torch reminds us whom we serve - no one less than the King of Kings who promises a Crown of Life to those who are faithful to Him

"... Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life." - Revelations 2:10

Vesper

Captain Divine
Our work is now complete
And ere we part
We gather at Thy Feet
To give our labours and ourselves to Thee
Without reserve Thy cause to serve
O Captain hear us as we pledge to be
True to our creed in thoughts and deeds
Amen

History of Girls Brigade

THE GIRLS BRIGADE was formed in Dublin in 1893. It was founded on the twin pillars of Bible Class and Physical Training. Its aim was "the extension of Christ's kingdom among girls."

THE GIRLS' GUILDRY was founded in 1900 as a Church-centred organisation providing programmes for four age groups. Its various activities were aimed at helping girls to become mature Christian women. It was a interdenominational and international movement with a strong emphasis on service to others.

The GIRLS' LIFE BRIGADE was founded in 1902 by the National Sunday School Union. Its aim was "to help and encourage girls to become responsible self-reliant and useful Christian women."

The UNION of the three organisations was announced world-wide in the following press statement on Thursday, June 25th 1964 with the following statement:

"The Girls' Life Brigade, The Girls' Guildry and The Girls' Brigade of Ireland, all sister organisations of The Boys' Brigade, announced that agreement in principle has been reached on the formation of a new united organisation and that details will be worked out as soon as possible.

This agreement is the result of negotiations which have been carried on for some time in a spirit of cordiality and it is believed that the united body, which will be known as THE GIRLS' BRIGADE will be of great benefit to all concerned."

The UNION was formally confirmed on June 10th, 1968 and the united body took on the name of THE GIRLS' BRIGADE.

The movement is international and interdenominational. Its world-wide membership embraces many races, languages and dialects. Today, THE GIRLS' BRIGADE can be found in more than fifty countries and nations throughout the world. It also has affiliation with Christian youth in Europe.
